Take a moment to appreciate the beauty of our surroundings and consider what steps we can take to preserve it in its most pristine condition so it can be enjoyed for generations to come.
Given climate change and the negative effects upon our environment, there have been many dire predictions of the long-term devastating impact unless we rapidly take action to live a more environmentally sensitive lifestyle. While this may seem daunting, we should recognize that our responsibility is to do what we can and take solace in the words found in the second chapter of Pirkei Avot, Ethics of the Fathers, “lo alecha ham’lacha ligmor,” it is not your responsibility to complete the task, but rather “v’lo ata ben chorin l’hibatel mimena,” but you are not permitted to completely avoid the issue.
To learn more, read this enlightening analysis and appreciate the breadth of wisdom contained in the Torah, print out the second chapter of Ethics of the Fathers this afternoon and join thousands of fellow Jews around the globe who will be enjoying an uplifting experience and inspired discussions this Shabbat.
