In the 4th chapter in Pirkei Avot, Ethics of the Fathers, Rabi Eliezer Ben Yaakov states: “He who fulfills even a single mitzvah, gains himself a single advocate”, suggesting that as a result of performing a mitzvah, he will have gained for himself an advocate who will be there for him on the Day of Judgment.
