There is a well-known adage that asserts that “It is better to give than to receive.” When you do give, make sure to give with a full heart.
This week’s Torah portion, Terumah, begins with the Almighty directing Moses: “Speak to the Children of Israel and let them take for Me a portion.” The commentaries all wonder why the Torah used the word V’yikchu, and they shall “take” rather than V’yitnu, and they shall “give” to the building of the Mishkan, the Tabernacle where the Almighty’s presence would dwell.
To appreciate the profound impact that giving has on the person making a donation, read this especially enlightening and uplifting thought entitled “Charity–the Only True Possession” from Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald’s Torah message on this week’s Torah portion, Terumah 5776-2016. Out of respect for Shabbat, please consider printing it on Friday afternoon if you plan to read it on Shabbat.
