Distinguished rabbis who lead their community are often known for their outstanding Torah knowledge and scholarship. The intrinsic value of the study of Torah is, of course, not limited to those who are in leadership positions. In fact, the sixth chapter of Pirkei Avot, Ethics of the Fathers, outlines many ways in which the study of Torah is beneficial to the individual: “… for there is no free individual, except for he who occupies himself with the study of Torah. And whoever occupies himself with the study of Torah is elevated…”
