Study history to appreciate how the Courland Jews, who retained many of the elements of traditional Judaism from neighboring Lithuania and Poland, while at the same time incorporating some of the educational and cultural attitudes of the “enlightened” German Jews, were exempted from living only in the Pale of Settlement in Russia.
