Live your life knowing that during every moment others will see your actions as representing Jews and Judaism.
Before acting or speaking, we need to consider the repercussions of that speech or those actions to determine if they will profane God’s name and the implications could be far-reaching. In the 4th chapter of Pirkei Avot, Ethics of the Fathers, that will be studied around the world this coming Shabbat, we are taught, “Rabbi Yohanan ben Berokah said: whoever profanes the name of heaven in secret, he shall be punished in the open. Unwittingly or wittingly, it is all one in profaning the name.”
Set aside some time this Shabbat to consider the many beautiful teachings found in Pirkei Avot.
Out of respect for Shabbat, please consider printing out the 4th chapter of Pirkei Avot on Friday afternoon if you plan to study it on Shabbat.
