Use this Shabbat and this Sunday, erev Shavuot, both part of the Sh’loshet Y’mei Hagbalah, the three days that precede Shavuot, to learn more about, and to delve into the wisdom of the Sages by visiting NJOP’s Shavuot resource pages.

Chapter six of Pirkei Avot, Ethics of the Fathers, that will be studied this Shabbat around the world, includes beautiful adages highlighting the exalted place for those who study Torah and make it a part of their lives. Here a short excerpt from the one of the Mishnayot in this chapter: “Great is Torah for it gives life to those that practice it, in this world, and in the world to come, As it is said: ‘For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh’ (Proverbs 4:22), And it says: ‘It will be a cure for your navel and marrow for your bones’ (ibid. 3:8) And it says: ‘She is a tree of life to those that grasp her, and whoever holds onto her is happy’ (ibid. 3:18).”

In order to enjoy an especially uplifting Shabbat, please consider printing out the 6th chapter of Pirkei Avot on Friday afternoon if you plan to read them on Shabbat.
