Think about the old adage, “Freedom is not free” on this Independence Day. Discuss America’s enduring values with those with whom you spend Independence Day.
In the 5th chapter of Pirkei Avot, Ethics of the Fathers, we are taught “One who causes the community to be meritorious, no sin will come by his hand.” As an example, the Mishna states, “Moses was meritorious and caused the community to be meritorious, so the community’s merit is attributed to him.” Both the Israeli commandoes in Entebbe and those who fought for American independence and its freedom two hundred and forty-nine years ago, have no doubt positively impacted others with their actions.
To learn more and appreciate the breadth of wisdom contained in the Torah, print out the fifth chapter of Ethics of the Fathers this afternoon before Shabbat and join thousands of fellow Jews around the globe who will be enjoying an uplifting experience and inspired discussions this Shabbat.
