When you hear that a Jewish friend, neighbor or coworker has lost a close relative, make time in your schedule to pay a shiva call.

In the third chapter of Pirkei Avot, Ethics of the Fathers, we are taught a beautiful concept: Beloved are Israel, for they are called children of God; it is a sign of even greater love that it has been made known to them that they are called children of God, as it is stated: “You are children of the Lord your God” (Deuteronomy 14:1). Given that we are called “Children of God,” we should emulate His ways. Just like He has compassion, so too should we have compassion for those who have suffered a loss.

To learn more and appreciate the breadth of wisdom contained in the Torah, print out the third chapter of Ethics of the Fathers this afternoon, before Shabbat, and join thousands of fellow Jews around the globe who will be enjoying an uplifting experience and inspired discussions this Shabbat.
