Even if you have strongly held beliefs, be willing to read articles written from a different vantage point than your own in order to appreciate another perspective on a particular topic.
Our Sages have taught us the value of listening to what others have to say and valuing their opinion, even if we disagree. While we may have strongly held beliefs, we should be careful to respect the views of others, especially those of our friends, even when our points of view may differ. There is a beautiful idea expressed in the 2nd chapter of Pirkei Avot, Ethics of the Fathers, that Jews around the globe will study this Shabbat. “Rabbi Eliezer said: Let the honor of your friend be as dear to you as your own; and be not easily provoked to anger.”
Set aside some time this Shabbat to consider the many beautiful teachings found in Pirkei Avot. Out of respect for Shabbat, please consider printing out the 2nd chapter of Pirkei Avot on Friday afternoon, if you plan to study it on Shabbat.
