High Holiday Beginners Service

Training Videos

Join Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, Director of NJOP, as he shares his expertise in the following High Holiday Beginners Service Training Videos. In this video series, Rabbi Buchwald describes best practices for running a Rosh Hashana Beginners Service, a Yom Kippur Beginners Service and Abridged Beginners Services for both Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Please join us as we learn from this master of Jewish engagement.

The videos are each between 9-12 minutes long and are geared towards anyone seeking to engage fellow Jews on the High Holidays. Whether you are a rabbi, or a lay leader, your observance is traditional or more progressive, you will benefit from these engaging videos.

Beginners Service History

In December 1975, Rabbi Ephraim Buchwald created the first Beginners Service at Lincoln Square Synagogue on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Five years later, the service was prominently featured in the New York Times. After that massive exposure, the service surged in popularity and became standing-room only. Thousands of searching Jews have gotten their Jewish start at Rabbi Buchwald’s Beginners Service.

To stem the rising tide of assimilation, Rabbi Buchwald founded the National Jewish Outreach Program, now NJOP, in 1987, which has since offered over 1.5 million program experiences to North American Jews. NJOP has helped launch hundreds of Shabbat and High Holiday Beginners Services which have engaged thousands of Jews to reconnect to Jewish life.

Please do not hesitate to contact NJOP if you are interested in running a High Holiday Beginners Service or if you have any questions. There are staff members ready to assist. (646) 871.4444 or [email protected].

These Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur Training Videos have been graciously sponsored by the Freyer Family Foundation in memory of Carl Freyer, z”l.
